Posted by Belles on Tuesday, April 28, 2009, In : Courses

Lovely Belle Ailsa has let us in on the fantastic  Distracted Manual Arts Academy.

Distracted are at 324 Oxford Street in Leederville and are self proclaimed ‘Merchants of Fancy’. They are a busy lot  - as well as a coffee shop, art shop and curiosity shop they run monthly art workshops.

This month they have tempted the wonderfully talented Kyle Odgers (aka Creepy) to reveal all about drawing characters. And they promise no drawing skills are required! We like.

Perth Belle Power!

Posted by Belle on Friday, April 24, 2009, In : Community Announcement

We’re official!  The CWA Perth Belles launched at Tiger Lils last night in a blur of wine, sushi and spring rolls.  We were joined by CWA State President, the lovely Pam Batten, along with Pat Twiss (State International  Officer) and Judy Scott (State Extension Officer) and heard tales of the first WA branch (launched in 1924), inspiring community work, World Conferences adventures (I don’t think Finland will never be the same) and secrets of making microwave jam.

For our May meeting ...

Lights, candles, action!

Posted by Belles on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, In : Craft

Nothing is prettier that candlelight. It’s the easiest way to create ambience in an instant (in fact - so easy, it’s almost like cheating).   And how can you resist with ideas like these?

If you'd like something dramatic, you can create a simple outdoor chandelier using found items in under an hour. All you need is an old wire basket, jam jars, votive candles and a selection of old plastic beads, crystals (or even old junk-shop jewellery). Huge thanks to lovely London Belle(inda) for ...

Time for some good old fashioned....craft!

Posted by Belles on Tuesday, April 21, 2009, In : Craft

We’ve been trawling the web for the latest, greatest craft ideas and we’ve found some gems.

We love this simple tutorial on how to make resin jewellery (and you thought it was hard?). You can buy charms or moulds to fill with resin, or recycle  bottle caps, shells, or old jewellery  - and use found objects (such as  dried flowers, newspaper/magazine cut outs, beads, tiny watch and computer parts) to create one-of-a-kind treasures.

We know there are suppliers in Perth however we c...

Save the Kimberly – What’s your view?

Posted by belles on Monday, April 20, 2009, In : Environment

If you were at the West Coast Blues & Roots festival on the weekend, you may have heard some strong views about the proposed Kimberly Gas Hub by headliners Missy Higgins and John Butler. So what’s the fuss about?

Those against? Feel passionately that the Kimberly is one of the last great wildernesses in the world and should be protected at all costs. They are also critical about the fairness of the native title deal proposed by the government.

Those for? Are buoyed by the benefits o...

Live Smarter.

Posted by Belles on Friday, April 17, 2009, In : Environment

According to the good people at Living Smart, nearly two thirds of Australians say they cannot afford to buy everything they really need, despite the fact that Australians are richer than ever and about three times better off than their parents in the 1950s.

Their solution lies in the age-old adage – it ain’t what you got, its just how you use it!

They’re currently running free courses all over Perth that reveal simple ways to live more sustainably. So if you want to get tips...

What's going on at CERN?

Posted by Belles on Wednesday, April 15, 2009, In : Science

We Belles were ridiculously excited last September about the biggest science experiment the world has even seen  -  the launch of CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC).  A 27km circular tunnel (running deep under the Swiss-French border), the LHC was built to smash protons together at velocities just below the speed of light… and just maybe uncover some of the secrets of the universe in the process. However, only 36hours into the project, the machine was found to have a fault and shut down!

Grow your own organic veggies this autumn.

Posted by Belles on Wednesday, April 15, 2009, In : Gardening

Autumn is a great time to plant a veggie patch – whether you are a novice or first time gardener.  The soil is still warm, roots will grow strongly and your plants can establish themselves before winter.

A few pointers to get you started...
- Don’t have a lot of space? A small garden bed is fine – you can even use pots and containers.
- Mix in herbs or flowers and your garden will be functional AND look specky.

- Supermarkets usually stock a variety of seeds and they are incredib...

Ban the bag!

Posted by Belles on Tuesday, April 14, 2009, In : Environment

The Belles were recently shocked to hear about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch – a plastic soup of floating waste twice the size of the USA.

We were happier to hear that in three weeks time, South Australia will be the first state in the nation to ban plastic shopping bags.
From May 4, shoppers in SA will no longer be able to get bags at the checkout. It's a small inconvenience that will have a huge impact - to the tune of 400 million plastic bags a year.

Fantastic news for the planet - alt...
